ARTIST DONATELLO

BIOGRAPHY

In the work of the early Renaissance sculptor Donatello (born Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi) life seems to burst out of the metal and stone. His greatest masterpieces include the vigilant marble Saint George (ca. 1417) in the Orsanmichele msueum, Florence; the graceful figure of young David (ca. 1440); and the impressive bronze equestrian statue of Gattamelata (erected 1453) that harked back to ancient Roman art. Donatello’s use of sinuous forms, which encourages the eye to move around the figure, influenced generations of Italian sculptors, mostly notably Michelangelo, well into the 16th century.

POSITIONING OF DIFFERENT ROOMS ACCORDING TO THE VASTU PURUSHA MANDALA

WHAT IS THE LOGIC BEHIND THE POSITIONING OF DIFFERENT ROOMS ACCORDING TO THE VASTU PURUSHA MANDALA?

Because of the importance of sunlight to humans, the main aim of Vastu Shastra is to ensure that the inmates of a house are inadvertently exposed to the useful rays of sunlight, even if they are inside the house the whole day. But during a day, people perform different activities in different rooms at different times and the Sun’s position keeps changing from sunrise to sunset. So to ensure that the inmates get exposed to sunlight constantly, each room should be positioned so that it faces the Sun at the time of the day when it is most likely to be used.
The 24 hours  of 1 solar day are divided into eight parts which are associated with the eight cardinal directions. In each of these eight periods, the Sun is positioned in one of the cardinal directions. So the room which is most likely to be used during that period is located in this direction. This is explained here:

Puja Room or meditation room in the North-East: The Reasoning – The period between 3am and 6am, just before sunrise is called Brahma Muhurta. At this time, the Sun is in the North-Eastern part of the house. These hours are ideal for Yoga, meditation, or study as it is very quiet and peaceful. Therefore, the North-East corner is the best position for the Puja Room or meditation room.

Bathroom, doors/windows in the East: The Reasoning – From 6am to 7.30am, the Sun is in the eastern part of the house. This is the time for bathing and preparing for the day, so East is a good location for a bathroom used for bathing purposes only. In addition, there  should be lots of openings and no obstructions in the East so that the beneficial ultraviolet rays of the morning Sun will engulf the house.

Kitchen in the South-East: The Reasoning – The time between 7.30am to 9am, when the Sun is in the South-East part of the house, is the best time for preparing food to be eaten later in the day. Therefore, the kitchen can be located here as the UV rays of the Sun will keep the kitchen counter free from germs that spoil the food.

Bedroom, office, Store room in the South: The Reasoning - The period between 9am and noon is the time for work. The Sun is now in the South, and hence this is the best position for an office and a bedroom. By noon, the intensity of the heat is high and so the South is  ideal for store rooms which need to be moisture proof.

Master bedroom, Wardrobes in the South-West: The Reasoning – After lunch it is time for rest, so the time between noon and 3 pm is called Vishranti, the resting period. The Sun is now in the South-West section of the house and so it is the ideal location for a Master bedroom and the wardrobes should be kept on the west wall to reduce the heat.

Children’s bedroom, study room, toilets in the West: The Reasoning - The period between 3pm and 6pm is the time for children to study. The Sun is in the West and this is the best location for a children’s bedroom or study room. Since the West gets  very heated up, it is beneficial to have less used rooms like toilets which serve as buffers to the heat.

Second bedroom, dining room in the North-West: The Reasoning –  The time between 6pm and 9pm, when the Sun is in the North-West part of the house, is the time for eating, relaxing and sleeping. Therefore this direction is good for another bedroom and dining room.

Safe, Living room in the North: The Reasoning - The time between midnight and 3 am, when the Sun is in the Northern section, is the time of darkness and secrecy. The North is therefore the best place to hide valuables and to keep them protected.

Colours In Our Life

The moment one opens his/her eyes, a world filled with colours perceives before him. The impact of these colours on various aspects of our life – emotional, intellectual, materialistic, physical and intuitive – is immeasurable.
The moment one opens his/her eyes, a world filled with colours perceives before him. The impact of these colours on various aspects of our life – emotional, intellectual, materialistic, physical and intuitive – is immeasurable. This is because every color has specific properties and characteristics that influence our moods, behavior and even lifestyle. During ancient times, learned men realized the significance of different colours, and associated them with corresponding planets, the seven major charkas (energy centers) in our body, and seven days of the week. It is no surprise then that colours play a major role in the creation of a good vaastu environment.

It is a well-known fact that colours are basically vibrations of light. When white light hits an object, certain wavelengths (vibrations) are emitted, and these form different colours. White light can be divided into seven primary colours of the spectrum – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. These colours can then be combined to create secondary colours and shades.

In order to bring harmony in our life and vaastu environment, it is important to understand the properties of these primary colours. These have been discussed below:

Red: This is the colour of blood and has an obvious association with our life and body. Red symbolises lust, passion, materialism and other base energies, as well as being associated with fire. It provides activity, energy and will power.

The front façade of structures facing the south direction should be painted red; those who do not like red can add a red colour element to the front exterior.

Inside the structure, you can paint the south wall of the living room red to create life force energy.

Rosy red or pink shades can be used in the bedroom as they symbolize deep love. Pink is an ideal colour for newlyweds, and should especially be used by couples wishing to conceive. People who are generally irritable or couples facing conflict in their relationship can also benefit by this colour. In fact, pink can be used anywhere in the house.

Deep or dark red shades signify anger and should not be used in bedrooms.

Orange: This colour represents pride, ambition and communication. It also signifies health and vitality.

Young, aspiring people who are yet to achieve their goals in life should use orange shades on the southern wall of their bedroom.

Since it is a fiery colour, it should not be used by people who have a cross or angry nature.

Orange shades can be used in kitchens that are located in the south or southeast.

It is an increasing color, the people who feel low should use the orange shades in there life.

Orange shades can also be used in the puja room.

Yellow: This colour signifies illumination, light, intellect and higher mental activity. It is also a colour of goddess. This color is best for Maa Lakshmi, she likes this color. Yellow is good for studies, concentration and stabilizing the mind, and is best suited on the northern walls of a building.

What do you mean by colour of goddess? Please explain?

Please provide some tips for this color.

1. North facing structures should have yellow colors.
2. North side rooms can have yellow colors.
3. Yellow has cementing nature; those with fractures and weak bones should use yellow colors clothes.
4. Yellow is a color for the solar plexus chakra those with behavioral problems can use this color.
5. This color is good for prosperity, yellow semi-precious and precious stones can used to keep in the cash boxes or the wallets.

Green: This color symbolizes nature, fertility, abundance, prosperity and the growth of positive energy. It also represents rebirth, signifying the re-creation of new ideas. Green is a healing color as well, and is good for heart and high blood pressure problems. The color also has a cooling effect on persons with an irritable, stubborn nature.

Green can be used as a remedy by couples experiencing clashes in their married life; pastel green shades in southeastern bedrooms have a soothing effect.

Green is a harmonious color for the east, and structures facing this direction must have an element of green element in their front façade. Consultants, architects, designers, fashion stylists, and others in the consulting profession should have a green element in their office.

Blue: This is the color of the sky, and also represents water. It signifies emotions, inspiration, devotion and truth. Blue is also a healing and merciful color, and helps reduce pains in the body.

It can be used in the children's bedroom, but should not be used in a kitchen, restaurant, office or shops. Why for both parts of the sentence? Blue is a reducing color that is why it should not be used for restaurants, office and shops. It has a non stable nature.

The most harmonious direction for using blue is the west. Please elaborate in a couple of lines. Because the one of the best color for west is blue, west is owned by varun dev the god of water, blue represents the water that is why the blue color is good in west.

Its use is strictly prohibited in the southeast as this direction signifies fire, which is in complete contrast to water, represented by blue.

Indigo: This color offers a deep connection to the inner self, creates spiritual qualities, and enhances psychic abilities.

It can be used anywhere, expect in toilets and kitchens. However, it is ideal for meditation and study rooms.

Using white or yellow with violet make for a positive combination.

Indigo is a color of lord Krishna.

Violet: This color represents religious devotion, knowledge and temperance. It enhances spiritualism, improves memory and concentration, and provides stability of mind.

Violet is best used in poojan (prayer) and study rooms, and is ideal for students, scholars and people whose work requires a lot of mental activity.

This color is also good for people who are indecisive.

Violet color should not be used in toilets and kitchens.

Violet color if used in more quantities it gives spirituality, especially where ever there are more ambitions and materialistic approach of life violet should be used in less quantities. In business and trading places it should be used in limited quantities. People with clear mind and only money based should less of violet color and visa versa.

Violet color gives contentment in life, so whosoever feels unsatisfied all the time without any reason should use more of violet.

What is Creativity

Creativity refers to the phenomenon whereby something new is created which has some kind of subjective value (such as a joke, a literary work, a painting or musical composition, a solution, an invention etc). It is also the impetus and motivational force behind any given act of creation, and it is generally perceived as being associated with intelligence and cognition.
The range of scholarly interest in creativity includes a multitude of definitions and approaches involving several disciplines; psychology, cognitive science, education, philosophy (particularly philosophy of science), technology, theology, sociology, linguistics, business studies, and economics, taking in the relationship between creativity and general intelligence, mental and neurological processes associated with creativity, the relationships between personality type and creative ability and between creativity and mental health, the potential for fostering creativity through education and training, especially as augmented by technology, and the application of creative resources to improve the effectiveness of learning and teaching processes.

Why We Photograph..

Why We Photograph..
Perhaps there is a deeper psychological explanation. Our time on this earth only lasts for so long, and a camera allows us to preserve memories far past when they might have slipped our mind. It helps us pass those memories into the hands of future generations. Our photos are little legacies of the life we have led – our travels, experiences, food, family, friends, work relationships and more. Each photo is a window into a moment, and the collections of images we take over the years are a window into who we were and what we valued. Ultimately it comes down to a simple truth – seeing that moment captured makes us genuinely happy-( Matt Dutile)

Integrated B.Des and M.Des 5 year Course
The Industrial Design Centre at IIT Bombay launched a UG degree in design The Industrial Design Centre (IDC) at IIT, Bombay (IIT-B), will offer an undergraduate (UG) programme in design from the upcoming academic year. The move follows the launch of the National Initiative for Design Innovation by the ministry of human resource development last year to ensure maximum reach of design education and practice in the country, promote design innovation in all sectors and develop collaborative projects between institutions.

Students can opt for the standalone Bachelor of Design (BDes) spanning four years or the integrated dual MDes offered over five years. The BDes is meant to train students in product design, visual communication design, interaction design and animation design.

Informed B K Chakravarthy, head, IDC, "As we progress from a knowledge-driven economy towards a creative economy, design will play a crucial role in helping us address global needs. At IDC, we already offer MDes and PhD programmes, so adding a BDes enables us to make our offerings holistic in terms of student intake levels."
He elaborated, "During the first year, students would be trained in need finding and analysis. The focus will be on discovery and explorations. While the second year will train students in creativity and problem-solving focusing on concerns and sensitivity, the third year will stress on skills and media options and students will learn about collaborations and systems." At the end of the third year, BDes students will need to decide whether they intend to pursue the integrated MDes.

Chakravarthy added, "The course also has research modules in the fourth and fifth years (in the case of students pursuing the integrated MDes programmes)."

Intelligent Design

Intelligent Design -Concept or Theme ?

It's our belief that good design is only possible if it is inspired by an excellent concept. A concept is quite different from a theme. We have witnessed many projects inspired by a theme: Greek pillars, Egyptian mummies, the proverbial blue and terracotta of Morocco and so on. But for us these spaces usually have none of the criteria by which we would define professional interior design.

In term of design development, theme and concept almost meet the same definition. What are the differences between these two issues? And how to clarify or differentiate it?

Concept is a near full/basic idea, whereas theme happens to be an idea around a specific concept or topic; more of an idea in detail.

A concept is an overall idea, a thought process, forming the base of a design, and then you design a theme which depicts and expresses your core concept.
Thus, a theme reinforces the concept. The theme is a communication bridge between your concept and the user of your design. It helps the user to understand your concept; look for good examples.

Concept is invisible; on the other hand, theme is what is out there, a visual representation.

The hairline distinction between the two is hardly differentiable, they fairly go hand in hand for a design.

Yet concept envelopes the design as a shell, whereas theme plays the role of a thin skin; not protective, yet compulsory for evolution.

What is Creativity?

What is Creativity?

An Ability. A simple definition is that creativity is the ability to imagine or invent something new. As we will see below, creativity is not the ability to create out of nothing (only God can do that), but the ability to generate new ideas by combining, changing, or reapplying existing ideas. Some creative ideas are astonishing and brilliant, while others are just simple, good, practical ideas that no one seems to have thought of yet.Believe it or not, everyone has substantial creative ability. Just look at how creative children are. In adults, creativity has too often been suppressed through education, but it is still there and can be reawakened. Often all that's needed to be creative is to make a commitment to creativity and to take the time for it.

An Attitude. Creativity is also an attitude: the ability to accept change and newness, a willingness to play with ideas and possibilities, a flexibility of outlook, the habit of enjoying the good, while looking for ways to improve it. We are socialized into accepting only a small number of permitted or normal things, like chocolate-covered strawberries, for example. The creative person realizes that there are other possibilities, like peanut butter and banana sandwiches, or chocolate-covered prunes.

A Process. Creative people work hard and continually to improve ideas and solutions, by making gradual alterations and refinements to their works. Contrary to the mythology surrounding creativity, very, very few works of creative excellence are produced with a single stroke of brilliance or in a frenzy of rapid activity. Much closer to the real truth are the stories of companies who had to take the invention away from the inventor in order to market it because the inventor would have kept on tweaking it and fiddling with it, always trying to make it a little better.

The creative person knows that there is always room for improvement.

Why are you drawing?

Why are you drawing?

First ask yourself not only what you want to draw but also why do you want to draw it? What is the message you’re trying to give the viewer? Knowing the message you’re trying to convey to your audience is a crucial first step. For example, imagine that you want to draw a picture a dog then ask yourself why? Is it to show how cute he is? Is it to show how good hunter he is? To show how dangerous he is? Is it in memory of him?

Having identified the message the next step is to consider how you can use the elements and techniques you have to tell it. You can use perspective, dark and shadows, colors, composition, add different details, use different drawing techniques etc.

Next you should try out where your picture is going by making lots of small thumbnail sketches. Try different ways to create the drawing, see what actually works and what doesn’t. Make these sketches quickly. The idea is to put the overall composition into place, so you don’t need to spend time adding a lot of details on them.

It’s sometimes very difficult, even for professional artists, not to jump ahead and start on the final picture before things are really thought through. But this scenario often ends with that attempt going into the bin once you’ve realized that your first idea didn’t work the way you’d first thought. So it’s a very good idea to use the preliminary steps when starting a drawing as it will save you a lot of work in the long run.

Getting started drawing

You have finally sketched a composition you like to translate in a full-blown drawing? Then it's time to get started. This time it's not speed but beauty you want to strive for. And there are some tips that will help you to create the beautiful drawing you want to create – without too many attempts going into the bin.

It's all about the order in which to approach the different parts of your drawing ideally. All in all there are just two simple rules:

Start with light tones, proceed to darker tones

This allows you to fix small mistakes you've done early in the beginning as the darker tones can hide any of your mistakes.

Start sketchy and get detailed later

In most cases the drawings are ruined by distorted proportions, perspective and composition. So start first laying out the whole drawing without details just in faint lines. This makes sure you'll introduce all errors in perspective and proportion early in the process. If something goes really bad then, you can start over again without losing too much work. And all smaller blemishes still can be fixed easily as there are only faint lines and no details in place.

Even if you are experienced and drawing for years, it won’t hurt to think about these tips once again. Actually I'm forgetting these guidelines too often – and introduce errors into my drawings that could have been avoided. And you'll see these guidelines are even more helpful, if you've just set out to learn drawing.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Most renewable energy comes either directly or indirectly from the sun. Sunlight, or solar energy, can be used directly for heating and lighting homes and other buildings, for generating electricity, and for hot water heating, solar cooling, and a variety of commercial and industrial uses.

The sun's heat also drives the winds, whose energy, is captured with wind turbines. Then, the winds and the sun's heat cause water to evaporate. When this water vapor turns into rain or snow and flows downhill into rivers or streams, its energy can be captured using hydroelectric power.

Along with the rain and snow, sunlight causes plants to grow. The organic matter that makes up those plants is known as biomass. Biomass can be used to produce electricity, transportation fuels, or chemicals. The use of biomass for any of these purposes is called bioenergy.

Hydrogen also can be found in many organic compounds, as well as water. It's the most abundant element on the Earth. But it doesn't occur naturally as a gas. It's always combined with other elements, such as with oxygen to make water. Once separated from another element, hydrogen can be burned as a fuel or converted into electricity.

Not all renewable energy resources come from the sun. Geothermal energy taps the Earth's internal heat for a variety of uses, including electric power production, and the heating and cooling of buildings. And the energy of the ocean's tides come from the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun upon the Earth.

In fact, ocean energy comes from a number of sources. In addition to tidal energy, there's the energy of the ocean's waves, which are driven by both the tides and the winds. The sun also warms the surface of the ocean more than the ocean depths, creating a temperature difference that can be used as an energy source. All these forms of ocean energy can be used to produce electricity.

Why is renewable energy important?

Renewable energy is important because of the benefits it provides. The key benefits are:

  • Renewable energy technologies are clean sources of energy that have a much lower environmental impact than conventional energy technologies.

  • Protects our environment and public health by avoiding or reducing emissions that contribute to smog, acid rain, and global warming; and by reducing water consumption, thermal pollution, waste, noise, and adverse land use
  • Increases economic development and create new family-wage jobs
  • Creates new competition to help restrain fossil fuel price increases
  • Improves our national security
  • Diversifies our fuel mix and enhance the reliability of fuel supplies
  • Insulates our economy from fossil fuel price spikes and supply shortages or disruptions
  • Reduces a growing reliance on imported fuel and electricity
  • Reduces the cost of complying with present and future environmental regulations
  • Conserves our natural resources for future generations

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

As designers, we understand that design has the inherent power to transform our behaviors and to shape our culture. It is why we have both a responsibility and a tremendous opportunity to use that power to ignite change and to communicate the importance of sustainability to individuals, corporations, society, the environment and ourselves.

Sustainable design (also called environmental design, environmentally sustainable design, environmentally conscious design, etc.) is the philosophy of designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply with the principles of social, economic, and ecological sustainability.

The intention of sustainable design is to "eliminate negative environmental impact completely through skillful, sensitive design". Manifestations of sustainable design require nonon-renewable resources, impact the environment minimally, and relate people with the natural environment.
Beyond the "elimination of negative environmental impact", sustainable design must create projects that are meaningful innovations that can shift behaviour. A dynamic balance between economy and society, intended to generate long-term relationships between user and object/service and finally to be respectful and mindful of the environmental and social differences.

While the practical application varies among disciplines, some common principles are as follows:
  • Low-impact materials: choose non-toxic, sustainably produced or recycled materials which require little energy to process
  • Energy efficiency: use manufacturing processes and produce products which require less energy
  • Quality and durability: longer-lasting and better-functioning products will have to be replaced less frequently, reducing the impacts of producing replacements
  • Design for reuse and recycling: "Products, processes, and systems should be designed for performance in a commercial 'afterlife'.
  • Sustainable Design Standards and project design guides are also increasingly available and are vigorously being developed by a wide array of private organizations and individuals. There is also a large body of new methods emerging from the rapid development of what has become known as 'sustainability science' promoted by a wide variety of educational and governmental institutions.
  • Biomimicry: "redesigning industrial systems on biological lines ... enabling the constant reuse of materials in continuous closed cycles..."
  • Service substitution: shifting the mode of consumption from personal ownership of products to provision of services which provide similar functions, e.g., from a private automobile to a car-sharing service. Such a system promotes minimal resource use per unit of consumption (e.g., per trip driven).
  • Renewability: materials should come from nearby (local or bio-regional), sustainably managed renewable sources that can be composted when their usefulness has been exhausted.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Interior design describes a group of various yet related projects that involve turning an interior space into an effective setting for the range of human activities that are to take place there. An interior designer is someone who conducts such projects. Interior design is a multifaceted profession that includes conceptual development, liaising with the stakeholders of a project and the management and execution of the design.

An Interior Designer implies that there is more of an emphasis on Planning, functional design and effective use of space involved in this profession, as compared to interior decorating. An interior designer can undertake projects that include arranging the basic layout of spaces within a building as well as projects that require an understanding of technical issues such as acoustics, lighting , temperature, etc. Although an interior designer may create the layout of a space, they may not build the space without having their designs stamped for approval by an architect, which is why many interior designers also complete school to become architects as well. An interior designer may wish to specialize in a particular type of interior design in order to develop technical knowledge specific to that area. Types of interior design include residential design, commercial design, hospitality design, healthcare design, universal design, exhibition design, spatial branding, etc.

Other areas of specialisation include museum and exhibition design, event design (including ceremonies, parties, conventions and concerts), theatre and performance design, production design for film and television ETC..
